Honor Where Honor is Due

This is a recording of the presentation of the Bronze Star to WW II Veteran Melvin E. Ziegler.  Melvin and his wife of 62 years, Iola, have been driving to Salem Full Gospel Church from their home in Owensville, for the last 20 years.  Melvin was recently informed that he had earned the Bronze Star Medal in 1945, but presentation of this award was not made until today, January 30, 2011.  Making presentations today were the American Legion Colorguard, State Representative Jason Smith, a reading of the Congressional Record (as recorded by the Honorable Blaine Luetkemeyer), and Pastor Bill Stack.  Melvin served as an Infantryman in the 88th Infantry Division (Blue Devils), and was shot while helping liberate Italy from German brutality.  At one point, Melvin's company of 175 was reduced to 10 men, and reassigned to a sister company.  After being shot, Melvin continued the attack until physically unable to do so, and ordered to seek medical treatment.  It was then discovered that the bullet had circled his ribcage, and stopped at his shirt pocket containing a New Testament Bible given to him by his cousin.  At 85, Melvin is a proud member of the "Greatest Generation", who helped ensure liberty for many around the world, including us.  Greater love has no man than this, that a man would lay down his life for his friends.  Thank you, Melvin.  God bless you today as you listen.
